Woods was created by Townsville musicians & artists from August 2010 - January 2011 :-) Produced & mastered/recorded by my dear friend Mitch Nordine. The songs are all originals - & there are guests on the recordings too such as Cahill Kelly from Alligator Creek in the river memoire, and the incredible Sean Thomas in Dollhouse. The album art was a collaboration between fashion photographer Brad Tennant & digital installation artist/illustrator Robert Crispe.
Most of the recording was done in Melbourne - I saved up at a new job, spontaneously bought plane tickets and left. With little planning, but lots of dreams :-) Mitch Nordine was the producer of my first EP back in Townsville, and I wanted to keep that friendship and beautiful collaboration intact as we shared the journey together. Although, from the first day when we realized we had no piano to record on…the experience was somewhat sporadic and intense. Constantly learning, constantly growing, and constantly running around in the rain trying to borrow pianos for the day...
We ended up recording in a number of places: Allan’s Music Store practice rooms where they gave us soundproofing and were wonderful at guarding our gear when we ran away for much needed coffees, or on 3rd floor of beautiful grand pianos at the Victorian College of the Arts music block. We also froze in suburban Melbourne garage studios and bedrooms with lava lamps. Then when Mitch came back up to Queensland for Christmas we recorded at James Cook University and went on a mixing road-trip up north as far as Paronella park, where we explored old castles, rainforests of giants, and wet summer highways, collecting samples for the album and texturing the recordings that were finished.
The positive of recording with a best friend, in a city where you can only wear something ridiculous on account of knowing no-one (which actually turns out being the normal thing to do in Melbourne) and doing it all from your own pocket, dreams and hands, is that we can only look at these recordings with love; remembering all of the wonderful memories that are entwined within a set of tunes and melodies.
The woodland folk that I met along the way have just been beautiful. You are the fellow birds, inspiring flowers and other creatures that have altered the way I think and create.
Thank you always for your support.
